Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection and late-stage acquired immunodeficiency syndrome exacerbate morbidity in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, worsening the prognosis for life. The present study aims to analyze the causes of hospital morbidity of patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome infection, admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, during the period from 2017 to 2019. The scope of analysis is cross-sectional, retrospective. We reviewed 140 digital medical records of admissions of patients with HIV/AIDS hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit during the period under study. Sociodemographic variables, personal pathological history, causes of morbidity and hospital stay were analyzed by statistical analysis using SPSS version 22. The conclusion was that hospitalizations of immunocompromised patients with HIV infection continue to occur despite the availability of HAART therapy in Ecuador.
