Institutional care of the new born: Documentary review

Objective: Characterize the inherent aspects of the institutional care that is provided to the newborn. Methodology: Documentary review with search in databases and gray literature with pre-established; analysis of information collected and presentation of results. It includes literature of databases with a publication of maximum six previous years, gray literature obtained in official pages of institutions of higher education, regulations and protocols obtained in official pages. Results: 490 documents were collected, 110 were discarded for not meeting the criteria; multidisciplinary interventions were identified, care was compared with existing regulations and recommendations at the national and international levels; the mediation of the health personnel is identified in the contact and care between the newborn and their relatives that permeates the link especially through breastfeeding, but it is done emphasis on family education is very important for the prevention of accidents and training of new parents. Conclusions: The benefit of establishing an education plan with a family focus in the institutional area that has continuity in Ambulatory contexts and strengthen the affective bond, to decrease maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. The documentary review regarding the institutional care of the newborn allows generating research and intervention proposals to reduce the mortality rates of newborns and contribute to social development. The nursing professional is the one who mediates in institutional care.
