Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health problem. In this framework, health workers face great challenges, with several stressors and risks to their physical and mental health. The main objective of this research was to understand the social and psychological impact on frontline health personnel facing the health emergency caused by COVID-19.  A qualitative study was carried out, through active interview with flexible script through digital media to officials who work in the first line of attention in front of the COVID-19, in the provinces of Cañar and Pichincha, Ecuador. The data were analyzed through the hermeneutic method. The main narratives related to the experiences of health personnel in their struggle against COVID-19 were identified. Health personnel, faced with long shifts, scarcity of supplies and a health system on the verge of collapse, express fear of contracting SARS-CoV-2 and infecting their loved ones, difficulty in sleeping, fatigue at the end of their work day and the effect on their mental health. In conclusion, psychological well-being and prevention of mental illness should be one of the main priorities when dealing with COVID-19.
