Abstract

It is estimated that in Ecuador there are some 300 000 domestic hot water systems running on LPG, the vastmajority in the Andes provinces, mainly in the higher income households. LPG is a fuel subsidized by the government of Ecuador for the purpose of cooking, which is imported at a higher price from 90 cents of US dollar per kg and retails for 11 cents of US Dollar per kilogram. The use of water heating systems with solar thermal energy would permit the Ecuadorian state save a considerable amount of money that can be used for other purposes at the same time contribute to the reduction of negative impacts from the production and use of petroleum products and of course to reduce the generation of CO2
