Ecuador: Review of the main characteristics of forest resources and deforestation

Abstract

This paper seeks to place the reader on the main characteristics of forest resources in Ecuador, as it has innate weather conditions that favor the growth of forest species, having large areas for exploitation; however, the increase in economic activity has caused considerable environmental deterioration, producing a change in the forest cover and land use in the country as a consequence. Additionally, historical patterns of deforestation and the evolution of deforestation rate are analyzed. In this context, the design of an adequate environmental policy, which promotes a balance between economic growth and the sustainability of natural resources, will allow the timber industry to develop and improve social, economic and environmental conditions of the country.
