Abstract

Occupational safety was historically addressed through regulations and training, but alarming global statistics demanded new approaches. Industry 4.0 introduced disruptive technologies, generating both efficiency gains and new risks, giving rise to the concept of Safety 4.0. This study critically analysed the integration of immersive technologies (AR/VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) for risk prevention (2019-present), with a global, Latin American and Ecuadorian focus. The methodology reviewed scientific literature along four axes: (1) benefits of AR/VR in knowledge retention, (2) personalisation through AI, (3) impact on operational safety and (4) adoption barriers. Results revealed that the RA/RV+AI synergy, rooted in a systematic literature review across four thematic axes, enables adaptive training and real-time risk detection, significantly reinforcing prevention. However, technical and organizational barriers persist; longitudinal validation, ethical frameworks, contextual implementation strategies, and further research are advised to enhance industrial safety and sustainability.
