Santa Elena folktales to improve listening skills in English language teaching

Abstract

The Listening Comprehension Skill is the most important ability when developing the other skills: Reading, Writing and Speaking. The main objective of this research is to improve the Listening Comprehension Skills in English as a foreign language in students of Ninth Grade at EGB “Antonio José de Sucre”, an educational institution located in Pechiche, Chanduy, Santa Elena. There search was developed qualitatively and quantitatively. Through interviews and surveys, ameticulous investigation was carried out in order to determine whether or not the English teachers applied a good teaching-learning tool to support listening comprehension skills in the teaching-learning process. It was established that that most of the English Teachers did not usere sources to improve the Listening Skills; therefore, a decision was made to designa proposal for an Audiobook entitled Santa Elena Folktales with the objective to improve the listening comprehension skills of the ninth graders at EGB Antonio José de Sucre. The Audiobook was applied as a teaching learning tool to the sample taken by the researchers. The proposalwas implemented during two weeks in twelve sessions. Each of the sessions was evaluated to see the level of listening comprehension skills of students. The result was analyzed according to scores obtained from the quizzes applied per each session, and it was concluded that a 30% of increase over the diagnostic proved that the Audiobook “Santa Elena Folktales” had supported the improvement of the listening comprehension skills in students of Ninth Grade
