Abstract

In ancient times, various plant species were used in traditional medicine due to their medicinal properties, which were utilized in a variety of processes in both the food and pharmaceutical fields. The objective of this study was to characterize the bioactive components, specifically antioxidants and polyphenols, present in the species Clinopodium tomentosum in both dry and wet samples. An ultrasound-assisted extraction method was used to obtain the active principles, followed by the identification of these components using the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) and Folin-Ciocalteu techniques. The results revealed significant differences in the values obtained between the dry and wet samples. Specifically, concentrations of 1.49 mg/L of polyphenols and 1.27 mg/L of antioxidants were observed in the dry samples, in contrast to the wet extractions, which showed concentrations of 1.39 mg/L of polyphenols and 1.04 mg/L of antioxidants. These findings highlight the influence of the sample state on the extraction of bioactive components, allowing for the identification of their bioactive constituents. This suggests a promising potential for future research.
