Abstract

The exponential growth of the world's population has led to an excessive production of plastics, affecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, becoming an environmental problem. The objective of this research was to evaluate the presence of microplastics in water and sand of the Pacoche Coastal Marine Wildlife Refuge and Tarqui beach. The area was georeferenced for delimitation and sample collection, quantifying microplastics according to size, type and color, and an ANOVA was performed to identify significant differences between quantity, type and size of microplastics. The results showed that in Pacoche no microplastics were detected in the sand, however, in water 8 fibers were found and in Tarqui 49 particles, predominantly films. The absence of macroplastics in Tarqui indicates that the colligative forces disperse the plastics, while the 8 fibers in the RVSMCP are due to residues from permitted artisanal fishing.
